What's the most fanboy-ish thing you've seen?
Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 3:00AM Another question from Peter C. today. What's the most fanboy-ish thing you've seen?
Where do I start? Some people's Twitter timelines, some of the comments on LIM and who knows what else all around the web. I have to say that queuing for a new phone and screaming with excitement like a moron ranks high up there for me.

The one that got me today was one fanboy saying how technologically advanced and fast the new maps on iOS6 is. My take is it doesn't matter how pretty something is, if it doesn't perform its basic function (getting you somewhere, exactly where you want to be), then it's FAIL. It's like a beautifully designed car with all the latest kit. If it doesn't actually GO, then it isn't "fantastic."
The comments here are nothing compared to those on DailyTech. The most extreme tend to be by the Apple fanboys but Android has a fair few fanboys and even WP is represented.
I say Android; actually it's mostly people who hate Apple and that mostly leaves them with Android as a choice.
It used to be quite a pro-Apple site; that changed some time ago. The Apple fanboys seem to enjoy trolling there; it can be quite entertaining to see the exchanges as long as you don't take them seriously.
You get similar exchanges on that site between creationists and evolutionists (they also run science stories); they each have their fanboys too.
Republicans and Democrats too; the comments on that site are like reality TV without the bad hair.
My immediate thought was of the cheering groups I saw going into the Apple Store when the 4S was launched - I couldn't believe people could feel like that about a consumer product. But I'm not sure they were fanboys, just excited fans enjoying themselves.
I've had more than a few comments about my willingness to use Linux/Unix/BSD, and to tinker with stuff using a terminal, but I do feel now that saying I'm a happy Mac user (a shiny Unix) actually gets a stronger reaction from some.
Personal technology is now part of popular culture like music and fashion and brands. So not surprising we have people having parties and fun waiting for new technology launches.
.
When I queued at the 4S launch. Except I queued at Vodafone, Plymouth , their second store lower down the high street. I was first in line, after arriving at 7.39am for an 8am opening. Vodafone customers all thought only the main store at top end would have the 4S at launch. After I got my 4S I popped next door to the phones4u store who told me they had the 4S on all networks.
So I walked up to the monstrous 02 queue and told everyone I had my 4S but if they wanted to not queue they could pop into phones4u less than 1 minute away. Nobody budged. They all thought they had to queue for another 7 hours. Madness.
I picked up the Mac Daily News app along with MacHash to get a summary of Apple related stories from a variety of sites. Too many for me to go to regularly. While I like the Mac Daily News news content and app, the comments by whoever runs it are a perfect example of what I would call fanboyish. He/She is certainly entitled to his/her opinion, but rarely have I seen the scales tipped so far one way.
Just my opinion of course.
People queuing for days to get a phone, tablet, whatever. Nonsense.
the loads of fanboy idiots on crave - reading some of their posts you have to wonder if those cretins can really believe the drivel they spout. Saying that the "journalists" on crave in some ways are not that far behind the fanboys in their biased reviews.
"People queuing for days to get a phone, tablet, whatever. Nonsense."
Have to agree 100%, weird people sleeping out all night as well for a phone?
That said I wouldn't sleep out all night for concert tickets or anything else for that matter, too obsessive for me, I would scare myself ;-)
Several guys on Twitter comparing their iPhone 5 'home' screens (you know who you are). Err, they kind of all looked the same :-)
"Several guys on Twitter comparing their iPhone 5 'home' screens" - that's a new one. New backgrounds with all those "don't-let-see-through" icons? Cool.
