The Walkman F800: why bother?

Sony has launched the Walkman F800 which is powered by Android 4.0. In a time where even Apple isn't so bothered by the iPod Touch any more, a device which is better than almost any other portable entertainment player, I fail to see why Sony never learns to streamline and concentrate on what people want.

SAN DIEGO, July 18, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Sony today announced the new line of Walkman® Mobile Entertainment Players featuring legendary premium Walkman® sound quality. With Android(TM) 4.0, the new F800 Series incorporates Sony’s exclusive digital audio fidelity technologies delivering a richer, bolder and louder presence. The new line-up also includes the Walkman® E470 Series, the slimmest model in Walkman® history.

Designed for music lovers, by music lovers, Walkman® features unparalleled sound quality with Clear Audio technologies by Sony, assuring detailed sound with deep and powerful bass while restoring subtle high frequency details that get lost when listening to heavily-compressed digital music files. The integrated S-Master(TM) digital amplifier incorporated in the flagship F800 Series greatly reduces noise levels and distortion along with additional audio technologies to create an enriched music experience.

Some people want a quality music player. Niche market but why bother I agree.

If only it allowed a real CD to play... ;-) but looks nice. This most recent SONY devices' line is kind of beautiful to me.

I too would have to agree that it's a bit of a waste of effort.
The only thing that keeps my (quite old now) iPod well used is the 80Gb of storage for plenty of Audio and Video storage, and this unit offers no more than most phones. So I guess this is an Android smartphone without telephony, and only one App.

Beyond the marketspeak though, if it offers a truly superior audio experience, it may be worth it. Folks crow about the superior sound of Cowan devices (I've never used one so can't say from experience) and for someone to whom music is supremely important a standout standalone audio device would probably be worth it.
