Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle

The Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle could be useful if you own a Galaxy S III. Not a bad price either.

The Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle (EAD-T10UDEGXEU) can be connected to your HDTV to enable the streaming of content from your Samsung Galaxy S3. The dongle plugs into an HDMI port on your TV set and photos and videos can then be streamed to the TV via Wi-Fi.

Adding yet another wireless solution to your smartphone setup, the Samsung AllShare Dongle is the perfect companion to the Samsung Galaxy S3 official wireless charger, helping to create a tangle-free environment.

I was tempted, but there are some limitations.

Firstly it's advertised as 1080p, but there's apparently no device currently available that's capable of sending it 1080p. The S3 sends 720p.

Secondly there's a fair bit of lag. Not an issue for many uses but rules out action games.

Thirdly there are reports of significant compression artifacts.

This info came from the XDA forum around the time the dongle was launched; I don't have the link to hand though.

In the end I decided to stick with my MHL adaptor; it has none of those issues. Wireless would be nice but it's not that big a deal; if I'm touching the phone's screen then I'm looking at the phone's screen, not the TV. Wireless would give a little extra convenience but to me it's not worth the limitations.

Nvidia is leading the push to bring a standard hardware-based wireless audio/video transmission protocol to fruition, and you can bet that'll be low latency. It's gonna be a while yet though, at least a year I'd guess.

I'm curious to know if AirPlay has similar limitations. It's long been one advantage the iPhone had over Android and I'm wondering just how much of an advantage it is. You can bet they won't add support for the new standard when it's agreed.

I've been pleased with AirPlay, but I'd rather that there was an open standard for doing this. I haven't used AirPlay for gaming, so haven't noticed any issues with lag - just a case of distributing music and occasionally pushing out video, both of which have worked fine.

I can't comment on the HD side of things either; my projector is not that fancy!
