Rank your operating systems
Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at 4:00AM How do you feel about each of the mobile and desktop operating systems available today? Just place your preference in order and give a reason for each. Here are mine-
Mobile
1/ iOS (Still so easy to use and so unbelievably helpful every day)
2/ Windows Phone 8 (I see some good things coming out of this)
3/ Android (Incredibly flexible, but I just can't get on with it for every day use)
4/ BlackBerry (going nowhere and looks very dated currently)
Desktop
1/ Mac OS (love it to bits!)
2/ Linux (used it from time to time and it's incredibly efficient)
3/ Windows (I am never going back to Windows for too many reasons)

Mobile :
0 : PalmOS - Simple, Effective, Customisable, not-Bloated (but dead so doesn't count)
1 : Android - Customisable, Bloated (bad!), Missing PIM bits (bad)
2 : Windows Phone - Has potential
3 : iOS - Old fashioned (bad), not-Customisable (bad), Sandboxed (safe, like cotton wool babies)
4 : Blackberry - Extinct, just hasn't realised it yet...
Desktop :
1 : Windows : [except 8] Bloated (bad), Well supported, Familiar
2 : Linux : Has potential
3 : MacOS : Frustrating (can't find things quickly)
4 : Windows 8 : "Run away! Run away!", Arthur of Camelot.
Enjoyed PalmOS, but limited back then and dated now
Windows Mobile: enjoyed it at the time, but why did I need to use a stylus to operate my phone?!
Android: only credible competitor to iOS at the moment, in my opinion
iOS: fine if you can live within its numerous restrictions
MacOS: shiny Unix. Great if you don't mind paying the cost of entry
Linux / BSD: I use both for different things very happily; less shiny but lowered financial cost of entry
Windows: quite impressed by Windows 7, but prefer something a little more *nixy

Mostly with Shaun...
Mobile
1/ iOS
2/ Windows Phone 8
3/ Android
4/ BlackBerry
Desktop
1/ Mac OS
2/ Windows XP (Specifically, it's simple and lightweight today but still supports most things)
2/ Linux
3/ Almost any other Windows version
For me:
Mobile:
1. Honestly for me, Android and iOS as so close in my liking that I'm going to call it a tie.
2. Windows Phone - only used for a few days but was impressed. Just needs more useful apps (ones that I use)
3. Blackberry a very, very distant third.
Desktop:
1. Mac OS X - been using for some seven years now and absolutely adore it.
2. Windows 7 - Microsoft's best OS ever in my opinion. And the first one that has been as stable as Mac OS X. I don't recall ever having had a BSOD in Windows 7. If Mac OS X didn't exist, I could easily and happily use Win 7.
3. Linux - experience depends a lot on the distro that you use though.
4. Windows 8 - meh.
Mobile
1 - iOS - it just works. I don't want to have to think about how to do something when I use my phone or tablet.
2 - Android - If I was starting out, given the current offerings, it would be a tough choice.
3 - Windows Phone 8 - Haven't tried it but I'm wary of anything with "Windows" in the name
4 - BlackBerry - Don't know and don't see much future
Desktop
1 - Mac OS - Generally, it just works. Of course there are glitches, but for my purposes, easy to use and get done what I want
5a - Windows - I use XP at work. Windows 7 is better but it's still Windows.
5b - Linux - Getting there but still too much fiddling. Great if I was into playing with the OS but I'm not any more.
1. iOS - Love it's simplicity, but also hidden power. Appreciate it's not for everyone, but I think it's great
2. Mac OS X: Via my Macbook Pro. Love it (mostly, though the default Finder views rankle a bit - too many years of Windows use.
3. Windows 7: On my home PC. I still think this is the best OS MS have done to date, and see no reason to u/g to W8
4. Windows XP: On my Work PC. Functional.
5. BB: On my work Blackberry. Not a fan
6. Linux - or specifically Ubuntu: Have tried using this as a dual boot on my Windows 7 home PC, but frankly I haven't got the time or inclination to use it in anger.
Mobile:
1. Android - power, flexibility, choice
2. WP7 - Look and feel
3. iOS - Choice of apps fantastic, otherwise far too controlling and restrictive. Feels dated to me.
4. BB/Symbian - Just no...
Desktop:
1. OS X/Windows 7 - OS X has better task switching, can do more with Win 7
2. Ubuntu - use it when I want to get back in touch with my techie roots
3. Chrome? Not sure it counts as an OS and I've only briefly played with Chromebooks instore, but I like what I see despite the limitations
