On my third iPhone in a row and before that I had a Blackberry Bold 9000. Did own three Android devices during the last three years (Galaxy S2, HTC Desire Z and Orange San Francisco) but they weren't for me and never became my main device.
I am now working with a client where I have to use paper for notes so my Galaxy Note will be retired and will use my S3 as my main phone. Also means may not buy the Galaxy Note 10.1 nor the Surface tablet.
I'm using an iPhone 4 and upgraded from a 3G and before that a Treo680. My service provider had a 2 year upgrade period for full discounts. Since I was reasonably happy with them I re-upped for another 3 year contract. I was very happy with the 3G although it took me a few visits with it in the store to convince me to move from the Treo. As there were no alternatives that appealed to me, moving to the 4 was a natural. Now I'm waiting for the 5 or "new" or whatever they call it. I'm heavily into the Apple ecosystem but I still see no compelling reason to change.
Currently have a Lumia 800 which is my day to day phone, a Galaxy Note which serves as my work phone and tablet and both a Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S sitting idle.
Previously I was running the iPhone as my personal phone and the Nexus as my work phone.
The why is harder to answer. I upgraded from my Desire HD to the iPhone because of the (false) promise of Siri, the Nexus arrived because as a pure Google phone my expectations were that it would be first to get system updates. The Note was purchased purely because of the pen and the Lumia because I love the UX of WP7 and Zune Music Pass is just leagues better than Spotify...
I've messed around with Android devices, but they were mainly stopgaps during the periods when I didn't have an iPhone. I upgraded to the iPhone 3G from a Blackberry Curve, then to iPhone 4 and then to 4S. Right now I plan to continue on to the iPhone 5 if it has at least a 4" screen. Otherwise I may jump ship to a high end Android device.
I considered waiting for the new Note but I reckon it's too big for my pocket.
Latest rumour I heard is that the screen will be bigger than the original Note but the chassis will be about the same size. If they'd kept the screen the same size and shrunk the chassis that might have been better.
My S3 is out for delivery...should have it any minute now...hopefully...
My last phone was a G1 - current is the HTC Desire HD. Yes I tend to use my phones until they fall apart or until I really need to update.
Am slowly coming to the point where I think I need to update, as I don't think my Desire HD is really going to handle ICS to well, and that is where I would love to be.
So am considering the Galaxy Nexus (love vanilla android - but am concerned about battery life) - the SIII (am loving what I hear about its battery life), but am wondering if I shouldn't wait to see what the next Nexus will be as there are major rumours in that regard..

I upgraded from a Galaxy S to a free S2 with a better 18 month contact.

Now with iPhone 4, upgrade from Nokia N97. Don't need to say why, do I?
HTC Touch HD2, upgraded from HTC Touch HD. They were both the best of their day.
Hopefully my S3 will arrive tomorrow. The HD2 still does remarkably well running ICS but it's time to move on, and the S3 is the best of its day.

iPhone 4, 4S, Samsung Note, Samsung S3. Got bored of the shape of the 4/4S and screen to small for my old eyes. Note was amazing. S3 was even better.
What next, nothing for a while due to having 2 new labrador puppies. The cost of these plus our 3 cats puts a hold on finances for a while.
Ideally might take a peek at the Samsung Note or iPhone 5.
