Question: NFC?

Have you used NFC and do you find it useful? I still haven't used it in anger, but can see some possibilities in the future.

Everyday. I have a NFC sticker in the car and one under the hall table, and one by my bed.

Car sticker - turns vol max, car mode on , bluetooth on, wifi off and launches navigation app.

Hall table - reduces volumes , Bluetooth off and car mode off, wifi on, and launches rss app.

Bedside - turns volume to silent, phone on flight mode, swipe again reverses

All just need one swipe over 50 pence coin size sticker .

That's impressive, Gavin — I hadn't thought of using NFC in that way before.

I've used it for payments (both on the phone, but also the more common Oyster card) and, when part of the phone, I thought it was excellent — it was just for the canteen and coffee shops in the office, but it made things just so convenient. Swipe the phone, and payment done. I'd happily pay for more this way, but I'd like there to be a PIN entry process for the first transaction of a day / after a period / for transactions over a set amount.

Thanks Neil.

I use an app called NFC Task Launcher to program the nfc stickers. Really easy app to use.

I looked into NFC in some depth when I got my S3 and was tempted to try it out. Problem was I couldn't think of anything to do with it.

Tasker can do everything with the tap of a shortcut, without the need for sticking stickers around the place.

A lot of things don't even need a tap on a shortcut; when the S3 is put in a car dock Tasker can detect that (and distinguish it from a normal dock) and set the phone up accordingly.

When I get within range of my home wi-fi network Tasker turns on the wi-fi; it turns it off when I get out of range.

At night Tasker turns down the notification volume.

I've only scratched the surface of what Tasker can do; I haven't delved all that deeply myself.

For some reason Tasker doesn't have built-in support for NFC tags, but apparently using something like the NFC ReTAG app solves that.

Tasker is a great app, amazing actually if you want the same thing to happen all the time. NFC Task Launcher can work with Tasker - the options are then endless.
