While Apple struggles somewhat with its maps, Google has taken things further and decided to map below water. Check out this impressive Great Barrier Reaf collection here.
Here's the real reason Apple had to make their own maps:
Hardly a selfish reason, makes alot of sense since the navigation feature has been something Androidians have lauded over iOS users for years now.
Would still consider it selfish:1) They still had a year left of their deal, so they could still include it on the phones, and run their own service alongside giving their users the best possible options.2) I don't think Google demands that Apple refused were unreasonable - "more prominent branding and the ability to add features like Latitude, and executives at the search giant were unhappy with Apple's renewal terms" per the Verge report: http://www.macrumors.com/2012/09/25/apple-reportedly-had-over-a-year-left-on-maps-contract-with-google/
I am sorry but for both of those two reasons I still feel that Apple has put its own users at a disadvantage due to their own greed.
