How important is the quality of a smartphone external speaker to you? It isn’t something I would normally think about, but I use mine so much for podcasts, listening to music etc. that it is now a very important features. Sadly my Google Nexus cannot compete in this area.

I would never listen to music on any mobile device's built-in speaker.
I bought a Minirig speaker and it's excellent. Could do with more bass, but for the size it does extremely well. It's plugged into a Samsung HS3000 to give an Apt-X connection to my S3.
I was tempted to buy an Arcam rCube but tried one in a shop's audition room and wasn't impressed; it didn't live up to the hype. Although I was pleased that I could use my Sennheiser RS170's base unit to send lossless audio to it (because they both use Kleer) rather than buying one of their over-priced dongles.
I just use AirPlay to nearby speakers when I'm at home, if not play the content from the network rather than through the phone. Otherwise, headphones only - the speaker is fine for FaceTime, but I wouldn't want to use it for music.
Must be good enought to hear and use without headphones. So not critical but important.
I'd only use the built-in speaker for ad hoc conference calls. In that respect no smartphone has ever approached the quality of the HTC Touch Pro 2...
Semi important - have to be able to hear navigation instruction clearly over the music. And it has to suffice for the odd occasion when need hands free. I currently find the S3 adequate in this regard.
