I judge the situation. But I'm replying here whilst on a train, reading a book on my iPad - the two people opposite me both have computers out and are listening to iPhones, and I can see three more iPhones, two Kindles and a large tablet I do not recognise.
But would I do the same on the last train home, if I were the only one in the carriage? Perhaps not.
I've never felt unsafe when using my device anywhere, though like Neil it may be because every situation is (unconsciously) judged so the risk it mitigated before it arises. Having said that, I never really think about it, whether it's on a train, in a pub, in the street.....
Interesting. Never occurred to me. Mind you, I don't walk down the street looking down at my device, but it would never occur to me not to stop on the side of the street out of the pedestrian stream and do what I had to do. Maybe it's naive but it is also one of the luxuries of most places in Canada.
I use train and metro everyday. I'm used to it now and I've been of the few that has been using PDAs, tablets for the last ten years in public transportation. Only lately with the boom in laptops people started to use them publicly. But I was never afraid. Nevertheless I carry my smartphone and tablet on a briefcase and that's a bit worrying as I can be robbed while walking. So, I just hold tight and pray ;-)
never give it a thought - originally thought the post might be referring to connecting to open networks etc. Part of this might be to my earlier life where I lived in a very dangerous country, so thugs and mugs etc don't really overly concern me. Then I don't really go to dodgy places either, if I did I would probably be conservative in my phone usage.

I do, although I'd feel even safer with a Note II. You hit someone with one of those they ain't gettin' up ;o)
I do but am always alert of people around me. My iPhone 5 is in a combat case. One press of a button and boom to would be assailant.

I live in a pretty safe place, yet I'm naturally weary. But no, I'm not afraid to use my gadgets in public.
