Changing times

We are approaching one of those times again where the big players in the mobile world attempt to capture the imaginations of the masses. HTC is expected to announce Windows 8 devices and so has Nokia already, Apple will announce the iPhone 5, new Fires from Amazon along with a Paperwhite Kindle have been announced and no doubt the likes of Samsung, LG, Acer and the rest will join the party with RIM offering more details of BlackBerry 10 soon.

Strangely, I find myself looking forward to getting a new Paperwhite backlit Kindle above anything else because it has the potential to improve the reading experience even further and getting around the age-old problem of reading in the dark without having to use a light of some description. Even the official Kindle lighted case can be problematic when it comes to shard lights hitting the eyes.

I think I know what the iPhone 5 will bring, but look forward to being proved wrong and of course the iPad mini would be a better fit for me than the current hefty iPad which feels impractical most of the time. With so many new devices coming out in the near future, the real danger for Apple is that the iPhone could look outdated very quickly. Indeed, for many it could look outdated from day one…

It's been a great month so far, and I'm hoping next week is even better. I actually think the Paperwhite Kindle is the best item so far. It does one thing, really really well.

I'm in 2 minds on the iPhone 5. I've got very used to and happy with my S3.

The new iPad Mini sounds great. I would fund this by selling my iPad 2. But something tells me the iPad Mini will not be as good as the iPad 2.

And then there will be the Samsung Note 2 and new HTC models. New iPods . Exciting times.

Kindle Paperwhite - Money ready. Your move, Amazon.

iPhone 5 - Day of launch. iPhone 4S has been gone a week and very missed.

iPad Mini - Nope. Got an iPad. Love it. Don't need two tablets.

Well, Amazon really rocked the tech world yesterday and showed off some amazing stuff. The Paperwhite Kindle is a no-brainer for me and I've already pre-ordered. The Kindle Fires are fantastic if you can live within Amazon's eco-system and accept that they're NOT general purpose computing devices. And for the audience that Amazon is looking to target, that's just fine. I want less of an appliance and more of a computer in a tablet, so the Fires aren't for me.

The more I think of what the iPad mini will bring to the table, the less I'm sure I really want one. I would like to be in the iOS camp again - that's because of programs that I have in iOS that I still don't have in Android. But like the Kindle Fires, the iPad is more of an appliance and Apple's even more anal about controlling the eco-system than Amazon is. Compared to the Nexus 7 the iPad of any size is much more of a compromise and I'm kind of on the fence about whether I want to make that compromise or not. We'll see.

iPhone 5 - Never say never, but my S3 is proving to be the best phone all-around that I've ever owned. Not sure if the iPhone would bring anything sufficiently compelling to turn my head.

What's going to be really interesting is seeing how Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 in general do. This has probably been the biggest gamble that Microsoft has ever made and it'll be interesting to see how and if it pays off for them.

From the little I've seen of BB10, RIM looks like they've finally found a winning formula but I don't think they'll ever reach their former heights. I think they'll end up being a small player but I think ultimately they will manage to hang around and do okay for themselves.

Once again, swayed by the LIM crowd, I have purchased my third samsung galaxy (having owned the previous SI and SII). Is anyone who reads LIM willing to write a nice piece on the must-have features of this phone that makes them crow about it so much here? After 2 weeks I am on the verge of throwing out my third successive samsung smartphone without managing to comprehend everyone's awe.
