Benchmarks
Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 2:35AM Lots of stories flying around at the moment concerning the benchmark scores for the iPhone 5. It is the fastest of all devices except when it isn't...
iPhone 5-1601
Samsung Galaxy S III (running Jelly Bean)- 1781
Samsung Galaxy S III (ICS)-1560
iPhone 4S- 631
iPad 3- 791
Nexus 7- 1591

Anandtech did some analysis on this: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6298/analyzing-iphone5-geekbench-results
Note what they say at the end; they've found GeekBench unsuitable for comparing between iOS and Android devices.
By the way there's a monster coming: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6300/lg-makes-optimus-g-official-quad-core-15-ghz-apq8064-with-47inch-incell-touch
Same CPU as the HTC One-X except with twice as many cores. Also has the new Adreno 320 GPU, which smokes the previous generation.
This combo was primarily aimed at tablets; to have it in a phone is pretty impressive. Here are some benchmarks: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6112/qualcomms-quadcore-snapdragon-s4-apq8064adreno-320-performance-preview
I wouldn't be at all surprised if this combo ends up in the Galaxy S4.
Bug Blatter> Never in my life that Samsung is gonna put a Qaulcomm chip in their upcoming flagship for 2013 :) If will for sure be a new Exynos A15 chip and new Mali GPU
Well as far as actual unit cost (outright) is concerned it tops the charts.. LOL
benchmarks are useless when not calibrated for the operating system the device is running. (ie what bug blatter said). I think the difference between the S3 running ICS and the S3 running Jellybean speaks volumes for how useful the benchmark actually is when comparing two different phones with different OSes.
Good luck to you if you're stupid enough to buy a phone based on that benchmark.
I read the Anandtech report and whilst I agree that it is useless to make comparisons, the improvements in memory bandwidth and processing power over the 4S and 4 are considerable and will likely validate Apple's claim of double performance. Of all the changes in the iPhone 5, this is the most dramatic and should be felt in everyday tasks, multimedia and games.
These are interesting in a relative way. I have an iPad 3 and an iPhone 4. I expect the iPhone 5 to be significantly faster.
@MattiasA Samsung already uses the Qualcomm S4 in the USA version of the S3, just to get the efficient LTE modem.
@Bug Blatter Yes but they use their own Exynos quadcore with a separate LTE chip in its home country and in the upcoming S3 LTE for Europe released next month. In their new Exynos chip I am sure they will have the LTE integrated in the chip and not as a separate chip and then they will never go with Qualcomm chipset again. They only used that because it hade integrated LTE and their own chipset was not ready for production when they they released the S3 back in May

I have no idea what any of you are talking about, but it all sounds awfully clever:)
@MattiasA yes if the A15 Exynos with LTE is ready in time I'm sure they'll go with that, but we don't know if it will be. Remember Samsung's chip division is separate from its phone division and the phone guys don't really get to tell the chip guys what to do and when, or at least no more than any other large customer does.
@Shaun it's probably not your area of interest but here's a post I did on these things a while back: http://blog.clove.co.uk/2012/05/09/tegra-3-vs-qualcomm-s4-i-wantz-the-corez-the-hurtz-and-the-geebeez/
It was basically to spell out that S4 vs Tegra 3 isn't as simple as dual core vs quad core. A quad core S4 with the new Adreno 320 GPU should be a lot faster than anything else out there. It's uncertain whether the GPU will beat the one in the iPhone 5 but the CPU will be much much faster.
Don't really know what the fuss is all about.
The 4s does the job, and by the sounds of it so will the i5 - what more do people really want.
The S3 certainly does the job, even with its core throttled by the power saving feature (and yes it does really make a difference as proved by a couple of various bench marks I ran where the switching it on an off doubled performance).
This was just like my Desire HD when I first go it. And just like the Desire HD I suspect that in 2 years time when it is time for an upgrade its possible the S3 might be showing its age and might occassionally struggle, just like the Desire HD currently does. In which case yes it would be time for an upgrade. But as long as it does the job do I really care about benchmarks...
Especially considering we haven't see what a rooted jelly bean S3 with its kernals tweeked and its CPU over clocked can do - but suspect it would be very very quick.... But doesn't take away from the fact that a standard S3 does the same job virtually as quickly...
BTW, there's a website stating that the real price (for Apple) for making the iPhone5 is around 167 USD. 25USD more than the iPhone 4S: the new processor A6 costs 28USD and the modem Qualcomm 4G LTE 25 USD.
Here you have the costs:

It's Portuguese but you can understand the tech terms. "Ecrã" is Screen, "Outros" is Miscellaneous.
What do you think of this?
It came out in the case against Samsung that Apple has an over 50% mark-up on the iPhone. Companies will charge what people will pay; it's just capitalism.
The fact people will pay it is a whole 'nother matter...
